Hi all, and welcome to another Music Monday, an idea that originated at The Tattooed Book Geek – ‘just a nobody with a blog’ (wordpress.com).
It’s time to goth it up again with some early Dead Can Dance, in the form of In Power We Entrusted The Love Advocated from The Garden of the Arcane Delights.
The best single word to describe IPwEtLA is ‘shimmering’. It’s almost like a mirage. The guitar work and keys/yangqin/i’mnotsure are a rippling wave over the sparse cymbal work, given only the lightest anchoring by the occasional rumble of the bass coming through.
All of this lies over Brendan Perry’s vocals in a way that make them distanced and dreamlike. I’ve never been sure exactly how deep to read the lyrics to this song but even the most basic reading – that of a man caught in a dystopian situation, unsure where to go with nothing to trust but love – fits with the sound perfectly. It’s like he’s coming to us live from some Blake-esque dream/hellscape.
It all adds up to a song I can listen to endlessly.
And bonus ball! Here’s a cover I love just as much as the original
I love how it stays very true to the spirit and shape of the original while making a key twist; if the original is all soft and shimmery, this brings a soaring power to the song. It is less tortured irresolution and more a fervent declaration for love. Which makes it different enough for me to listen to endlessly too.
That’s this Monday’s choice, let me know what you think.
