#musicmonday – Money for Nothing by Dire Straits

Welcome all to Music Monday, an idea that originated at The Tattooed Book Geek – ‘just a nobody with a blog’ (wordpress.com).

There’s a reason for this selection, in this case one that starts with the humble puzzle. Puzzles were one of our many ways to mix up our at home entertainment during the many hours of lockdown. The most recent one we did was a Where’s Wally puzzle (the Wild West scene) and to keep us company, we stuck on a classic rock station, and that was the first time I remember hearing this song.

That was a week or so ago, and it has been stuck in my head ever since.

I mean, how could it not. Banhhh-banhhh-ba-ba-ba-ba… how can you resist that swagger and sardonic playfulness? There’s so much going on in this song, from the workman’s lament that Knopfler semi-faithfully recorded, to the way Knopfler interacts with it through his music and phrasing – sometimes sympathetic, sometimes mocking, sometimes a little proud to be that man being complained about.

Finally, can we talk about the man with the red blazer and white sunglasses? How much he’s loving it, how unbelievable his fashion sense is. Look at that yo-yo, that’s the way you do it.

p.s. While late by my usual timezone standards, it’s not past midnight here so suck it Shannon!

  1. “…the first time I remember hearing this song.”
And now I remember we’ve got almost 20 years between us, hehe
I remember this song when it was first released, it was one of the first music videos I watched, and then of course the amazing performance at Live Aid you’ve got there (my gawd they look so young!): my memory may be bad for many things, but I vividly remember being 15 and watching Live Aid, following the set from my copy of Smash Hits and feeling very “british” 🙂
